2-Deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) is a glucose analog that lacks the hydroxyl group at the 2-position of the glucose molecule. It is soluble in water. Structurally, it closely resembles glucose but lacks the hydroxyl group at the 2-position.

Glucose Analog: 2-Deoxy-D-glucose is structurally similar to glucose and can enter cells via glucose transporters. However, due to the absence of the hydroxyl group at the 2-position, it cannot undergo further metabolism in the glycolytic pathway and becomes trapped within the cell.

Glycolysis Inhibitor: 2-Deoxy-D-glucose acts as a competitive inhibitor of glucose metabolism. It is phosphorylated by hexokinase to form 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate but cannot be further metabolized by downstream enzymes. This leads to the inhibition of glycolysis, the primary pathway for glucose breakdown and energy production in cells.
